Gphone? Nah, how about ‘Android’

Industry Leaders Announce Open Platform For Mobile Devices.

Well typically yesterday I was in an exam for most of the day and pretty disconnected, so you can imagine my horror when I get home last night and have a quick flick through my feeds to find the latest news about the Gphone and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA).

The OHA is a collaboration between some of the most excited, experienced and focused companies in many technologies. You have companies like Google, HTC, Intel, nVidia, Qualcomm, SiRF, T-Mobile, Sprint, Broadcomm, Marvell and Texas Instruments to name just a few of the 34 involved.

The aim is to provide a not just one phone as we all first thought with the Gphone but instead an open platform for many phones, a platform to bring services to the user which they would otherwise not have. Its a very exciting announcement and its happening now.

HTC are already slated to have a device ready for release mid 2008 and the Android SDK will be available in less than a month, its incredible to think of the potential of this announcement.

PRESS RELEASE

“Android™ will deliver a complete set of software for mobile devices: an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications. On November 12, we will release an early look at the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) to allow developers to build rich mobile applications.

Open
Android was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all a handset has to offer. It is built to be truly open. For example, an application could call upon any of the phone’s core functionality such as making calls, sending text messages, or using the camera, allowing developers to create richer and more cohesive experiences for users”

This announcement can only mean good things for the handhelds market.
