Verizon opens arms to ‘Any device, Any Application’

Verizon WirelessI’ve given the network operators a hard time recently but for good reason. The dictatorship of the airwaves has done nothing to aid development of the mobile sector, in fact quite the opposite.

So Verizon’s announcement a couple of days ago is quite something:

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless today announced that it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon Wireless plans to have this new choice available to customers throughout the country by the end of 2008. “

This goes above and beyond just unlocked phones, this means you want to connect your games console or car, heck you could connect your kettle to a wireless CDMA network which currently serves over 63 million customers. The only gotcha is that the device will have to meet Verizon’s minimum technical standards.

Its another fairly big announcement and probably in response to the Verizon’s biggest competitor Sprint’s involvement with the Open Handset Alliance and its fairly advanced WiMAX program.
