Google releases ‘My Location’ GPS-less positioning

Google Maps betaGoogle maps have been lagging behind in the mobile maps war of late. Microsoft took the lead with added functionality like its voice activated searches but that could be about to change.

The new Google Maps Mobile 2.0 (beta) includes a useful bit of technology which can pin point your location using the mobile phone masts. This is a fairly old bit of technology and its only recently become accurate enough to use.

GPS is of course a lot more accurate and using the My Location system can only give you an estimate of your location within a certain radius, for dense street level positioning it would be fairly useless but to get a general idea its fantastic. I have tried it a few times and only once so far has it been wrong, it gave a pin point radius of around 1700 meters when in actual fact I was an addition 500 meters away from that, still fairly impressive.
